The Impact of Systems Integration
Rodney Collins,
Chief Weights Engineer, BAE Systems
Abstract
When identifying weight reduction we need to ensure we understand how
various systems interact and integrate with each other as well as
understand and implement the customer requirements. This presentation
initially highlights various aircraft systems, briefly identifying
design drivers and previous weight saving techniques as well as imposed
certification requirements which can drive weight into the system. The
end customer requirements for an Air Vehicle are simplified and stated
to allow an understanding of the implication of weight. The many
aspects which directly affect aircraft Payload are explained and two
examples of weight saving are explained with their resulting induced
problems. A structures example highlighting the benefits, as well as
the additional problems, carbon composites can introduce. Similarly a
systems example will be shown highlighting benefits and problems which
can be introduced with Electro Hydraulic Actuation. Potential research
ideas are presented to show the scope and variety of future
opportunities.
