"Affordable Light-weighting?"

A one-day conference to be held on 2nd May 2007, in the Compton Suite at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull.

Organisers: Professor Richard Hall & Julian Spence, University Wolverhampton
Jim Coyle, Advantage West Midlands (AWM)
Bob Newman, Midlands Aerospace Aliance (MAA)

We wish to bring academics and industry together to spend a day to focus on the problems involved with the "design" of lightweight structures for aerospace applications. Light-weighting is the activity of producing light-weight components for improved performance. Extreme examples are to be found in nature such as the 3D structures found in the bones

Per Lindstrand

The day will follow a conference style format where expert speakers will be invited to present on various important aspects of designing for weight reduction. The day will be initiated during the morning session by presentations on the need for improved light-weighting, including increased performance, reduced cost, and reduced environmental impact and sustainability. The main aspects of light-weighting will then be presented through case studies under the headings of Materials, Design and Manufacturing. Guest speaker will be "Per Lindstrand" (the balloonist and aeronautical engineer) and will present after lunch.
